How we react to any given situation determines how positively or negatively that situation can become. Steven Covey, author of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” explains that between the stimulus (event or situation) and our response (reaction) is a space or moment.
It is how we react in that space or moment that determines the direction of the event. We decide what happens in that moment. The stimulus can be anything:
- A negative or unflattering remark from a friend or colleague.
- A reprimand from your superior.
and so can the response:
- An equally negative or hurtful remark returned to the colleague, or
- A humorous take on the remark.
- A shift of blame to another party, or
- Accept responsibility and suggest a solution.
As you can see we can always decide how we want to react. It is up to us to ensure that our response is focused on positively improving the situation so that we can build stronger relationships.
To Your Success.
