We all know the saying, "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a life time. "

Well I believe life works the same way.  

We are Conditioned by Our Circumstances.

I heard a wonderful sermon the other day, and it was about how we are conditioned by life and the circumstances around us. The example used was of the rehabilitation of some eagles.

Now I am not going to mention exactly what kind of eagles and where this took place because frankly, I forgot, and am battling to find the information. But the moral of the story still applies.

What is the Worst That Could Happen?

The number one reason why people are not assertive is: fear. We are afraid of what others will think, say or do. This is quite normal, because no one likes to upset or inconvenience people. But being assertive usually results in someone being inconvenienced.

Let's talk about being assertive when buying a product or a service.

Think about what happens if you complain about cold, underdone or tasteless food in a restaurant. Someone will be inconvenienced. The waitress and the kitchen staff. You may get a grumpy look from an unprofessional waitress. But that's it.

But now think. What is the worst that can happen when you are assertive?
Someone will be upset. Big deal. Life is tough. If they can't stand the heat, they should get out the kitchen.

If you are paying for a service or product, then you have the right to get that service or product and if getting it inconveniences a sales person or manager, TOUGH.

If they give you a dirty look, just ignore it. They have no right to give you a dirty look after giving poor service or selling poor quality products.

You have every right to get what you paid for !

You Have the Courage!

When we start a project, we are sure we will succeed. We have faith in ourselves as we take the first steps to accomplishing our goals. But as time goes by we may become discouraged by the obstacles or difficulties. These may wear us down.

Here you have to remember that no matter how challenging it gets, you can succeed. If you had the courage to start then you also have the courage, within, to finish.

No One Said it Would be Easy.

I wish life was easy. But it is not. The sooner we face that reality, the faster we can work at becoming successful. Although you have a goal, it does not mean that you will achieve it easily. You may have many struggles along the way. The work required to succeed may not be so difficult, but you will most probably face obstacles sooner, rather than later. Or you may have to learn new skills. It takes time to learn. Then you have to work consistently. You may have to persevere and do it every day. It may even feel like hard work at times.
But if you have have a dream, then you know that the only way to achieve it, is to persevere. Success does not come easy. You have to work and struggle sometimes. You have to be prepared to even shed blood. To make sacrifices and loose sleep.

But in the end, the reward is worth all the suffering that you endured. So just keep persevering.

Don’t Quit

Just keep on keeping on. We give up much too often. Now if you are out of your purpose and there is no joy and fulfilment in your work, then by all means GIVE IT UP!

But if you believe you are doing what you are meant to, and have the goals and plans in place with the right attitude and keeping your life balanced, then DON'T QUIT! Hang in there. Even if it hurts like hell!

All these challenges are making you stronger. Don't miss out on the character development by giving up. Just keep on keeping on. You are a Winner. And Winners never quit. Take breaks, but carry on fighting.

Nothing Happens When Nothing Happens!

Have you noticed? When no one does anything, nothing gets done! "No, you're not serious?!!" you may ask in disbelief and wonder ;-)

We live like that often though, allowing frustrations to mount because we have not done something about them. Like cleaning the Garage (coz you can never find anything), asking the neighbour not to park opposite our driveway (coz we almost cause an accident every time we leave the house), resolving that conflict with a colleague – whatever the frustration is.
Perhaps we are too busy, or the job is too large. But every time we become aware of the problem the level of frustration rises.
"If it’s to be, it’s up to me" Just do it, Sort it out, before it drives you insane.

You'll feel great that you have done something about it. It will be one less "thing" to worry about. Get it done. You can!

Waiting to be Released

It Couldn’t Be Done!

Hear is a wonderful poem by Edgar Guest:

Professor : You are a Christian, aren’t you, son ?
Student : Yes, sir.
Professor: So, you believe in GOD ?
Student : Absolutely, sir.
Professor : Is GOD good ?

Professor: Is GOD all powerful ?

Professor: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to GOD to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But GOD didn’t. How is this GOD good then? Hmm?
(Student was silent.)
Professor: You can’t answer, can you ? Let’s start again, young fella. Is GOD good?
Student : Yes.
Professor: Is satan good ?
Student : No.
Professor: Where does satan come from ?
Student : From … GOD …
Professor: That’s right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?
Student : Yes.
Professor: Evil is everywhere, isn’t it ? And GOD did make everything. Correct?
Student : Yes.
Professor: So who created evil ?

Professor: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don’t they?

Professor: So, who created them ?

Professor: Science says you have 5 Senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son, have you ever seen GOD?
Student : No, sir.
Professor: Tell us if you have ever heard your GOD?
Student : No , sir.
Professor: Have you ever felt your GOD, tasted your GOD, smelt your GOD? Have you ever had any sensory perception of GOD for that matter?
Student : No, sir. I’m afraid I haven’t.
Professor: Yet you still believe in Him?
Student : Yes.
Professor : According to Empirical, Testable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says your GOD doesn’t exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student : Nothing. I only have my faith.
Professor: Yes, faith. And that is the problem Science has.
Student : Professor, is there such a thing as heat?
Professor: Yes.
Student : And is there such a thing as cold?
Professor: Yes.
Student : No, sir. There isn’t.
(The lecture theatre became very quiet with this turn of events.)
Student : Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don’t have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.
(There was pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)
Student : What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?
Professor: Yes. What is night if there isn’t darkness?
Student : You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light. But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and its called darkness, isn’t it? In reality, darkness isn’t. If it is, well you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?
Professor: So what is the point you are making, young man ?
Student : Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.
Professor: Flawed ? Can you explain how?
Student : Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good GOD and a bad GOD. You are viewing the concept of GOD as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, Science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing.
Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?
Professor: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.
Student : Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?
(The Professor shook his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument was going.)
Student : Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavour. Are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?
(The class was in uproar.)
Student : Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain?
(The class broke out into laughter. )
Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?
(The room was silent. The Professor stared at the student, his face unfathomable.)
Professor: I guess you’ll have to take them on faith, son.
Student : That is it sir … Exactly ! The link between man & GOD is FAITH. That is all that keeps things alive and moving.

Follow Your Dream

I watched a movie this evening, and there was this one scene where a father is giving a speech to his son (some of you may recognise which movie this is from) and I felt the what the father said was so true. So I tried my best to convey the message to you.

We all start out life innocent and good. We are full of boundless energy, enthusiasm and curiosity. Our heads are full of wild fantastic dreams of becoming fire-fighters, astronauts, pilots, business men, doctors, ballerinas or princesses. And then it becomes time for us to become our own person, venture out and take on the world, maybe with new dreams, new fantasies and new aspirations. New hopes and goals … it’s all good.

Some of you achieve these dreams, these goals, but some of you change. You stop being you. You let other people “stick their finger in your face” and say “you no good”. And when things start getting hard, you look for something to blame … The economy maybe, a relative, someone else. Well let me say this, though we all already know it … the worlds’ not full of sunshine and roses. It is a very hard, mean and vicious place, and no matter how tough you are, it will beat you down till your knees and keep you there …

IF YOU LET IT.

No one on this planet can hit as hard as life (except for Chuck Norris ), but its not about how hard you can hit, but how hard you can take a hit and still keep moving forward. It is about how much you can take, but still keep moving forward. That is how you win. So if you know what you are worth, what you want from life, then go out and get what you are worth or want from life, but you must be prepared to take what life throws at you (“you have to be prepared to take the hits”).  And stop pointing your finger saying “You aren't where you are” because of him, her, anybody or anything. Cowards and unsuccessful people do that and I want you to know that that is not you. You are all better than that.

So go out, make a difference in your lives. Take the punches life throws at you. And be a success.

What we say can slow us down and even make us quit.

How often do we say:”I can’t” and then 1 hr, one day or one month later we've done it?

Why say what is not true?

It just slows you down because you respond to your words.

Things like:

”This business is not working”

“I can’t go on like this”

"I don’t know what I’m going to do”

“This looks impossible”

"The people who change the world are people who have taken impossible out of their dictionaries." – Myles Munroe

Do you want to change your income, your marriage, your level of happiness? Then take that word out of your vocabulary. Everything is possible!!

It may mean hard work and effort but it’s NOT TOO difficult.

Your Life Is An Echo of You.

A son was taking a walk in the mountains with his father. Suddenly, the son falls, injures himself and screams out in agony:

“AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!”

To his amazement, he hears a voice, somewhere in the mountains:

“AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!”

Curious, the son yells:

“Who are you?”

The voice answers back:

“Who are you?”

Frustrated the son screams at the mountain: “Answer me!”

And the voice answers:

“Answer me!”

Infuriated the son shouts: “Coward!”

And receives an answer: “Coward!”

Confused the son looks to his father and asks:

“What’s going on?”

His father smiles and says: “Pay attention, my son.”

The father screams: “You are a champion!”

The voice then answered: “You are a champion!”

The son is astonished, but still does not understand. The father explains to him: “People call this an Echo, but really this is life. It gives you back everything you say or do. Our life is simply a reflection of our actions. If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. If you want more competence in your team, improve your competence. This relationship applies to everything, in all aspects of life. Life will give you back everything you have given it.”

Believe In The Good.

I thought I would share with you one of the many wonderful emails that get sent to me each day.

Believe the best about the other person. It is very easy to find fault with other's behaviour or their motives.

I had this problem in my relationship with my brother. It was only until I learnt to find good in others and believe the best about them that my relationship with my brother started improving.

Find good in others. One does not have to look for long before one will find something good in another person.

Yes, people have faults, but there are a lot of wonderful things that you will discover, if you only look with an open mind. You may discover talents or skills, that you admire or a sense of humour, or virtues such as honesty, kindness and generosity. These are the things that I discovered about my late brother when my attitude towards him changed. It changed my relationship with him completely

Forget About The Past And The Future.

We as human beings are such creatures of habit. We tend to fall into the very bad habit of looking back at the past and wishing we could change it somehow. Or look at the future with fear and trepidation. We are sometimes so focused on the past or the future, or sometimes both, that we completely miss out on the gift and joys of today and in the process we miss out on our true lives.

“So how do we live in the moment?” you may ask. Well it is quite easy, really. All you need to do is be aware all day long. Take the time to notice the day. Observe the beauty of a sunset, autumn leaves, blooming jacaranda trees, laughing children. It means having fun and not taking life so seriously.

Just relax, and as 94.7 says “SMILE DAMMIT!!!”
